Ont suivi plus de 26 succès pour James Brown dont Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud, Mother Popcorn, Lickin' Stick and The Chicken (rendu célèbre plus tard par Jaco Pastorius). Ainsi, Pee Wee Ellis a été surnommé « The Man Who Invented Funk ».
